The Origin of My Obsession with Comic Books

Around seven-years-old. There was a comic store around this shopping mall my family and I went to. I really wanted to go but my parents would not let me, they did not want to spend the money. They thought I would buy the everything in the store.

Later in the day as we were about to leave, I did this thing where I would sprint passed my parents and run down the escalator. I had done it numerous times before.

When I got midway down, the end of the strap on my sandal got caught on the edge of the left side of the escalator. It continuously kept tearing at my ankle each time it attempted to go up a stair. Finally, when I got to the end of the escalator, someone who worked at the mall helped me get off the mechanical stairs and saw that my ankle was ripped entirely to shreds.

So after screaming for help for a solid 30-45 seconds, the kind lady helped me to a seat at one of the booths that you see in the middle of the floor at the mall.

An example of what of I mean by, ” one of the booths in the middle of the mall “.

My parents rushed down the escalator to get to me. My ankle was a mess. Layer, upon layer, upon layer, of skin had been torn off. My slim, bony ankle, had skin hanging off either side of it. It looked like a knife had cut the skin down the middle but had the world’s most unsteady hands operating it. Thankfully, there was no emergency room needed. However, the manner was very urgent. They had me sit in a chair, this tall wooden chair that was a made from a light wood. They opened up their first aid kit and got out an ice pack. They placed the bare ice pack on my ankle ( the one that had been torn to shreds ). It was so much more than unpleasant. I didn’t go on the escalator and tear up my ankle on purpose this was 100% accidental. It just happened.

Thankfully, there was no emergency room needed. However, the manner was very urgent. They had me sit in a chair, a tall wooden chair that was a made from some kind of light wood. They opened up their first aid kit and got out an ice pack. They placed the bare ice pack on my injured ankle. It was so much more than just unpleasant. I didn’t go on the escalator and tear up my ankle on purpose this was 100% accidental. It just happened.

Then my parents starting asking questions; ” are you okay “?

” Is he going to be okay “.

Then after a minute or two, the other store employee went to go get something to wrap the ice pack in. She shortly returned with a whole bunch of brown paper towels. Then they wrapped the blue, icy cold, ice-pack in the brown paper towels. After about a minute of this. With tears streaming down my seven-year-old face. My mother holding my hand, my father close behind her. The store employees on my right. They watched over my ” jacked-up ” left ankle.

It was at this point in time that the store employee standing behind the one putting pressure on the ice pack, providing numbing yet soothing relief. Tears still rolling down my face. The crying and screaming slowing to a crawl. The standing story employee said,

” I will go get an accident report “. As she ran off to go get the paperwork. The rest sat and stood by either side of me.

The kind-hearted lady returned after three-five minutes with the papers and a pen. However, no one seemed to care. They were just worried about my well-being.

My parents never left my side as soon as they reached me.

An additional 10-15 minutes went by. It had been almost 30 minutes after the mind-boggling accident. It was until this point that the tears ceased rolling down my face. The screaming due to the fierce pain had stopped. My face completely numb from all the intense crying and screaming. I couldn’t feel a thing. Expect, I could feel the subtle throbbing of my annihilated ankle. The bone somehow still hidden behind the last couple of layers of skin. It was truly relieving to see.

It was a few minutes later, that my mother said to my father,” You know after this you should take him to that comic book store. He deserves one or two books after this “.
