              Two Double Lives

In the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and in the comic book series Detective Comics published by Detective Comics ( DC ). The characters of Dorian Gray and Harvey Dent are similar due to the fact that their mental state was corrupted by someone or something, they had schizophrenia, and how they were both murders. Dorian Gray was just an innocent young man, who Dorian. He corrupted him. Turned him into a two-faced liar. Harvey Dent was the courteous district attorney of Gotham City. A splash of acid manipulated him into the Two Faced criminal mastermind.

Dorian Gray was a young man in Victorian England who had possession of one of the most powerful things during this time period, beauty. Everyone in England is infatuated with him and his beauty. This especially holds true for an older artist named Basil Hallward. Basil was obsessed with Dorian as soon as he first laid eyes on him. Everything that Dorian did Basil followed closer than the strokes of his own paint brush. When Basil formally met Dorian he invited him over to his art studio so he could paint a portrait of him. When this happened Dorian was introduced to Lord Henry Wotton. Lord Henry or Harry as Dorian would sometimes call him would become one of the most influential people in Dorian’s life. He showed him how beautiful he really was. He showed him the power that he possessed. When Basil finished his portrait of Dorian Gray he gave it to him. Dorian, now that he realized how beautiful he was thanks to Lord Henry, wanted to stay this young forever. Instead of his physical features changing he wanted the portrait to change. He ended up making his wish come true by selling his soul to the devil. Lord Henry would continue to corrupt and manipulated Dorian. It was not long until he was so corrupt that he murdered the man who painted his portrait. He would most often fail to admit he had done this. Even to himself, claiming that Basil was responsible for his own death. Even though Dorian is the one who stabbed him. He began to suffer from schizophrenia. However, on an occasion, he reverted back to his innocence self and realized his guilt. Only to justified it by blaming someone else minutes later. The word justice had many meanings, especially in the courtroom.

Harvey Dent was the courteous district attorney of Gotham City. During a case with one of the major crime bosses in Gotham City Sal Maroni, Maroni threw acid at Harvey’s face. The left side of his face was horribly scared not to mention that it fractured his mental state. This corrupted Harvey to the point where he developed a severe case of schizophrenia. One-half of his body and mind was the courteous D.A. Harvey Dent. The other more dominant side was the criminal mastermind known as Two-Face. Obsessed with chance, Two-Face decided the fate of his victims with a flip of a two-headed silver dollar. In fact, this is how he makes all of his decisions. Whether it be legal or illegal. He had murdered and saved countless people this way. A flip of a coin or the words of a person, these are some of the things that can be an influence.

Dorian Gray and Harvey “ Two-Face ” Dent are from two completely different time periods. The Both very powerful in the places that they lived. One possessing the power of beauty and wealth. The other the District Attorney of Gotham City. They were popular people, loved by every single person that knew them. They were icons, celebrities. These two were the talk of their town. However, neither of them knew the true extent of their power. It only took one faithful day in both of their daily lives to change them forever. Dorian well posing for a portrait for his friend Basil Hallward met Lord Henry Wotton. Harvey had Sal Maroni on the witness stand in the middle of a murder trial. Lord Henry would use his words and a book to dictate Dorian’s thoughts. He made the extremely powerful Dorian Gray into his own personal marinate. He influenced Dorian to embraced his twisted, unethical, disturbing views on everything  from women, to marriage, to the way one should conduct yourself, to even life itself. Dorian was used. He was once an innocent yet powerful young man. Through the influence of Lord Henry and embracing his dastardly views on society, Dorian Gray began to act differently. So different in fact, that one of his old friends, Lord Staveley would question Dorian’s new persona “ Why is your relationship so fatal to young men ”? He would go on to say, “ There was that wretched boy in the guards who committed suicide. You were his great friend ”.  Dorian became a villainous figure destroying the lives of innocent citizens who he had befriended. He murdered Basil who he had known for 20 years. Due to the fact that he thought he would restore the portrait of him back to normal. It would clear his soul. Cleanse him from all the horrible things Henry had introduced him to. Unfortunately for Dorian, he could never get Lord Henry out of his life. Lord Henry was like a drug, an acid that had ruined his life. Well, Harvey Dent had Sal Maroni on the witness stand Sal became furious with one of the comments Harvey made and threw acid in his face. This scared the left side of his face horribly.  Not to mention how this incident fractured his mental state of mind. Harvey was driven mad. To the point where he developed a severe case of schizophrenia. He gained almost the same amount of power as the criminal mastermind. He began to run a sizable section of Gotham. he was feared throughout the city. He used his criminal skills, his mind games, and his lunacy to become a villainous figure destroying that lives of innocent citizens along with people they cared about. the Both corrupted, either by a master manipulator or acid thrown in their face. This “ ate away ” at both of their mental states. They caused them to develop severe cases of schizophrenia. This forced them both to become murders. Their lives were very similar. They both went down compatible paths. In the end, one path lead to death, the other lead to one man who lived long enough to see himself become an even greater villain.

The novel of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and the comic book series Detective Comics published by Detective Comics ( DC ) display two characters will mostly parallel paths. Fictional or not these characters were portrayed as real people with multiple layers. To some people they are relatable. Whether one was based off another one is up for debate. One thing’s for certain is that Dorian Gray and Harvey “ Two-Face ” Dent were both corrupted, schizophrenic, and murders.
